FAQs: Student History

Updated 12/4/24

Q1: What are the Measurable Skill Gains (MSGs) for students and how do I add them to student records?

MSGs are student outcomes compiled for Federal NRS reporting. See these help articles for descriptions of each MSG.

The process for adding MSGs to a student record varies. We've put together a quick reference chart that shows how to record each MSG: Chart: How to Mark MSGs in SiD.

Q2: When should I create a new history row?

Add a new row for every history group/item as soon as it applies to the student. Whenever possible, use the date the item went into effect.

For students returning to your program, use the Student Re-Entry button found on the Students>Summary screen. The form will add/update many student history items.

Q3: When do I put an End Date on an existing history row?

End Dates should be given for history items that no longer apply to the student. This includes students you add from another site.

An End Date is automatically assigned to many history items when a matching item is created. However, you must manually end items in these history groups when they no longer apply to students working in your program: (1) Program-State; (2) Program-NRS (other than ABE/ESL); and (3) Barriers to Employment.

Depending on the history item Effective Date, you may need to add an Exit Date or remove the history item altogether. See specific articles in the Student>History section of the Help Center or send us an email at SiDSupport@literacymn.org.

Q4: When do I use the SET, MET, and other Statuses?

Most of the history item Status options are optional. There are a couple of exceptions.

1. For Federal reporting, you must manually add the MET status for your program to get credit for these MSGs:

  • MSG 2: Earn a credit-based high school diploma issued by a local school district
  • MSG 3: Complete 12+ post-secondary credit hours
  • MSG 4: Make progress toward established milestones
  • MSG 5: Occupational Exam (Credential Attainment)

2. A history item SET status is not required for any federal reporting category. However, programs that use the optional Goal - Personal history group for local tracking may ask staff to create separate SET and MET history item rows for student goals. Ask your program manager for guidance

Q5: What do I do when a student meets a Personal goal?

You have the option to (1) edit the existing Goal - Personal history row or (2) create another history row showing the date the goal was reached.

  • Option 1 - Edit the existing Goal - Personal history row: Select the existing personal goal history item. Change the Effective Date to the date the student reached the goal. Mark the Status as MET.
  • Option 2 - Create a new Goal - Personal history row: Use the form at the top of the page to create a new history item. For the Effective Date, type the date the goal was reached. Mark the Status as MET.

Q6: Should I delete old history items?

No, please don't delete any legitimate history items. Only delete a history item when you create one by mistake. Instead, give an End Date to items that no longer apply.

FYI, you cannot delete any history items unless they were created at your site. Get in touch with us at SiDSupport@literacymn.org if you have questions about a history item added by another ABE program.

Q7: Where can I find a list of student history groups and items?

Click here: Student History Groups and Items. While we're at it, here are the links to Staff History Groups and Items and Volunteer History Groups and Items

Q8: Can we create our own history groups and items?

Yes! See this article: Add/Edit/Hide Site-Specific History items
