MSG 2: Passing GED/HiSET & High School Diploma

Updated 11/12/24

Federal NRS guidelines allow programs to report Measurable Skill Gains (MSGs). GED or HiSET exam.

For Federal reporting, earning a diploma or passing the GED/HiSET counts as an MSG 2. The SiD Measurable Skill Gain (MSGs) report and the Level Gains, MSGs, and Post-test Rates report both show detailed MSG 2 results.

Read on to discover how history items are selected for MSG 2 outcomes.

GED and HiSET

An MSG 2 will be assigned to students who pass the GED or HiSET exam in the selected NRS year.

The GED and HiSET are data matched. The match process compares a student's SiD record against a GED.com or HiSET record. When a match occurs, a history item will automatically be added to the student record. (See this help article for details about how the GED, HiSET data match process works.)

  • Students who pass the entire GED battery will automatically show a "GED 2014 Passed - MDE Match" history item on their SiD record.
  • Students who pass the HiSET exam will automatically show the history item "HiSET Passed - MDE Match."

High School Diploma

An MSG 2 can be assigned to students who earn a diploma in the selected NRS year.

There are two types of approved diplomas - local credit-based diploma and state competency based diploma.

  • Local credit-based diploma - Student has completed all missing high school credits. Their local school district will award them a diploma.
To receive an MSG 2, this outcome must be manually recorded as a history item on the student record.
    • On the Students>History screen, create an NRS Primary Goal> Local Credit Based Diploma row.
    • Effective Date: use the date the student earned the diploma.
    • Status: select MET <-- IMPORTANT!

  • State Competency-Based Diploma - Student has passed all requirements of the Minn. Dept. of Education.
This type of diploma is data matched. When the diploma is approved by the MDE, a history item will be automatically added to the Students>History screen. This student history item cannot be manually added by local programs.
