FAQ: Why Can't I Enter Hours for Comp ESL Students?

Updated 7/24/2024

Q: We have an ESL student who recently took a CASAS STEPS pre-test. Suddenly the teacher is unable to enter attendance for the student. He keeps getting this message: " (Badge) 12345 -- Student has no Valid NRS Test."

On the Students>Summary screen I did notice the Pre-Test EFL says "Comp ESL," whatever that means.

A: "Comp ESL" stands for "completed ESL," meaning the test score is high enough to move the student from ESL to ABE levels.

A Comp ESL PRE-test cannot be used to set an Entry Educational Functioning Level (EFL).

When SiD gives the message, "Student has no Valid NRS Test," it means the student doesn't have an approved test to set an EFL for the current program year. Without a valid test, staff can enter up to 12 hrs. Then the 12 hour lockdown for students with no EFL kicks in. You will no longer be able to enter student attendance hours until the date the student passes a valid pretest to set the EFL for the year.

Catching up missed attendance

SiD will not allow you to back-enter attendance that was blocked due to no EFL.

Example: Ricky Ricardo hit the 12 hour lockdown when you tried to enter hours for September 1st. He was tested on October 12th and placed in an ABE level. You cannot enter attendance hours Ricky earned between September 1 and October 11. (: 0)240724 CompESL Time tab.jpg

The solution

Comp ESL students who generate this SiD error message need a TABE or CASAS GOALS/GOALS 2 test ASAP to set an EFL! Then you can resume entering attendance taken on or after the valid ABE test date.
