What is a hybrid class?

A hybrid class includes both in-person and online instruction. To qualify as a hybrid class, students must participate in both parts of the class.

In ABE, hybrid classes may take 2 different forms:

1. Type A: In person and synchronously online (live via Zoom, Google Meet, Facetime, etc.) Example: The class meets in person on Monday and Wednesday, and then via Zoom on Friday.

OR

2. Type B: In person and asynchronously online (student completes independent distance learning DL work). Example: The class meets in person on Monday and Wednesday, and students are required to do distance learning work on their own time.

Class hours

Type A: In person and synchronous online

  • Both types of instruction count as contact hours so you only need to make one class in SiD.

  • Create one hybrid class to track these contact hours. See instructions below.

Type B: In person and asynchronous online

  • Students earn two types of hours - contact hours for in-person instruction and DL proxy hours for asynchronous work

  • These must be tracked separately in two different classes in SiD. To set this up:

    1. Create one hybrid class to track contact hours following the instructions below

    2. Enroll the student in an existing proxy hours class for the same DL platform, or create a new DL class if needed

Create a class for contact hours

Complete the Add Class form as usual, paying special attention to these fields:

  1. Class Name: Use a consistent format that includes "Hybrid," "Online," the online tool/software, and the content area. Examples:
    • Hybrid Online Zoom ESL 3
    • Hybrid Online FaceTime GED Math
  2. Attendance Format: Choose the option that fits your class:
    • Scheduled – for set meeting times (e.g., 9–10am)
    • Lab – open for student drop in (e.g., 9am-4pm)
  3. Student Hour Type: Select Contact
  4. Distance Learning Program: Select None
  5. Class Interaction: Select Hybrid
