Student History: record NRS Primary Goals MET

This article explains how to add NRS Primary Goals MET to a student record.

There are four NRS Primary Goals:

  1. GED 2014 Passed - MDE Match
  2. State Competency Based Diploma
  3. Local Credit Based Diploma
  4. Post-secondary Training

NRS Primary Goals are recorded on the Students>History screen. The MET history item must have a row of its own. Do not combine SET and MET NRS Primary Goals in a single line. See Student History: Manage SET and MET Rows.

GED 2014 Passed - MDE Match

To earn this high school equivalency certificate, students must pass all 4 GED subtests.

When the GED is granted, a MET history item will be created automatically during monthly GED data matching*. Data entry staff cannot add this history item to a Students>History screen.

If student names are missing from the report, contact us at support@mnabe.org.

*Note: a Personal Goal of "obtain GED" MET is not counted on the NRS Primary Goals report.

State Competency-Based Diploma

For this diploma, students worked with a MN ABE program to prove specific competencies and skills. They receive a diploma awarded by MDE.

When the diploma is granted by MDE after 10/1/18, an NRS Primary Goal MET history item will be created automatically. Data entry staff can add this history item to a Students>History screen for diplomas earned before 10/1/18.

Local Credit-Based Diploma

For this diploma, ABE students finished credits they were missing from their high school education. They receive a diploma from a local school district.

When the diploma is earned, manually create a goal MET history item.

  • On the Students>History screen, create an NRS Primary Goal> Local Credit Based Diploma row.
  • Effective Date: use the date the student earned the diploma.
  • Status: select MET.

Post-secondary Training

We are required to track people in this NRS category, but it is not high stakes. There is little federal guidance about how post-secondary training differs from education. Our thinking: post-secondary training leads to a vocational certificate. Post-secondary education (which is data matched) leads to a degree.

  • On the Students>History screen, create an NRS Primary Goal>Post-secondary Training row.
  • Effective Date: use the date the student enrolled in a post-secondary training program.
  • Status: select MET.
